January Books 9) Interview with the Vampire

9) Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice

This book really is the most utter tosh. I can see how it fits in the literary genealogy linking Bram Stoker and Buffy, but Stoker is less pretentious and Buffy is much funnier.

The second book, The Vampire Lestat, is slightly better. The third one turned me off the series altogether; I did not like the mythology she invented to explain the vampires... it was as stupid as the midichlorians=force explanation for Star Wars, and felt just as tacked on.

Last year, I found a copy of Tale of the Body Thief for a quarter so gave it a try, and my god was it horrible. Preternaturally so. I swear, she used the word "preternatural" in almost every paragraph. I wanted to charge her for each use, or at least get my quarter back. I think it was probably this book where she realized she no longer needed her editor. Guess what? She was wrong.
