Brussels

An old article but a good one on the expat life here. (Actually the Guardian's pieces on Brussels generally are worth exploring.) I don't think I've met the author of the first piece but he has interviewed me by phone.

Belgium is more than Brussels, as you know very well. Maybe the editors and writers of The Guardian are not aware of this simple fact. I assume that expats would want to live 'in the country' rather than in Brussels, experiencing the diversity of Belgium. They would have to join the army of commuters every day, but at least they would discover more hidden treasures.
The state of the art medical service and schooling comes with a price: excessive taxes. The downside are the meager pensions (at least for those of us not working for the government).

Hotel Brussels
Sounds a little like Los Angeles. Everyone complains about the traffic, smog, wildfires, earthquakes, etc. but are ultimately seduced into staying. You can checkout anytime you like but you can never leave.

Brussels seemed very nice when I was in it for about a day, although if I lived there I would spend all my time blowing the money I was saving on rent and travel in the convivial atmosphere of the William Tell and its ilk. burr burr burr.
