I was vox-popped yesterday lunchtime by a TV journalist from Al-Jazeera wanting to ask English-speaking passers-by in the Rond Point Schuman about the current turmoil in the financial markets. I said I didn't know anything about money and declined the invitation, exchanging friendly nods with the cameraman who has filmed numerous interviews with me by Balkan journalists.

I was a bit surprised, to be honest. Al-Jazeera seemed to have given their man a slightly weird assignment: "Go out onto the street in Brussels and see if you can find someone who will talk to you in English about global finance." I hope they managed to get something worth broadcasting in the end.

I think I'd have said that the only thing I know about money is that I don't have enough!

The thing is, as you note, you've been interviewed quite often before. Speaking on a subject you know nothing about has no attraction. For a lot of people, TV interviews are a sufficiently novel experience that they'll happily blather on about whatever the interviewer wants.
From the other side, getting something worth broadcasting, I doubt they were expecting serious financial analysis from a vox pop spot.

Maybe they were looking for someone who would make extreme and ill-informed comments they could run in their "Whitey - he so crazy" section of the news, and thought you looked the part.

Alas that I wasn't there with my better half, who has been following the markets with some attention (not worry - what investments we do have are easily cover-able, so if we lose, meh, we lose - just not very much, thank goodness!) so he's definitely developed some opinions that would have been share-able.

But, yes, how very strange an assignment. I mean, as I mentioned above, the better half has been doing a fair amount of work on his own time to get as informed has he has. They're surely not hoping for someone with that much background to just pop up in a vox pop? No, I didn't think so.
