Better late than never

Astrophysics postgraduate who abandoned his doctorate in 1974 in an attempt to become a rock star has now submitted his thesis.

He has not done too badly in the meantime.

Bless him!

I'm quite surprised he could just pick up work he'd left under dust-covers in 1974, and finish it off in 9 months, though. Partly because it takes a while to 'zone in' to something you've left aside for so long, but largely because I'm surprised in that field that thinking on the topic hasn't changed beyond all recognition in the intervening period. Still, I'm sure Imperial college know more about that than me!

It's basically rocket science. The field was a 'backwater' until it became relevant to IR satellite observatories.

I read in one off the reports on this story that there's actually been very little work done in this field since he gave up in the 70s. Now if he'd been doing a PhD in computing, he'd have had more trouble picking up the pieces of his thesis!

There's basically been two new studies in his precise field (doppler mapping of Zodical Dust particle kinematics) since he stopped, and one of those was by his ex-co-supervisor. There has been some other stuff, looking at the emission of the particles but not their kinematics, but not that much. So you're right, he has been lucky.

Aww, bless the 'Mayhem' - he looks all old and respectable! Makes me feel about 100 myself...

It's interesting that the Telegraph captions the picture as "with his wife", without naming her as Anita Dobson, a.k.a. Angie off Eastenders.

In some newspapers the headline would be "Angie's Husband Gets Degree" :-)

Anita Dobson hasn't been Angie of Eastenders for more than 14 years. In the interval she too has done some very good work in her field. Brava for the Telegraph for not having its brains up its backside.

I think Dexter from the Offspring is ABD in molecular biology.
