May Books 7) Main Street

Main Street, by Sinclair Lewis

Another of my attempts to familiarise myself with the work of Nobel laureates. I found this book really compelling, the story of a bright woman from the city who marries the doctor in a Minnesota town. The small-mindedness of her fellow residents is pitilessly portrayed, as are their repeated efforts to keep her spirit crushed. The main character, with all her faults, is convincing and sympathetic. I might read more by this author.

Top UnSuggestion for this book: Alanna: the first adventure by Tamora Pierce

I read Babbit recently, and found it very compelling. I highly recommend it.

I started Main Street and loved the energy and grasp of detail, but found the main character's vision of a better way to live somewhat busybodyish and uncompelling and felt like Lewis did too. I skipped to the end when she went to Washington and really liked that -- she was less condescending and more interesting in that situation.

In the battle of the Sinclairs, have you read The Jungle or Oil! by Upton Sinclair?
