re: Al Gore ... there really is quite a camp who would like him to run and at the risk of sounding ageist, I suspect it's a camp populated mainly by aging liberals who suspect Hillary, and don't want Bush to be the bookend on their generation's political life. Al Gore is certainly better cast as an environmental Carter than he is a new Grover Cleveland.

Perhaps it's an American instinct for these things - he had his shot, and whatever the result, it's not one that most people feel the need to revisit at the poll.

I'd have thought Nixon would have been a better comparison than Cleveland - Vice-President who lost a close (possibly stolen) election, who then says he's done with politics but comes back to win the Presidency in the midst of a war eight years later.
