Helping out

So the brother-in-law turned up this evening with an old map:

...and wondered if I could date it for him.

After much googling I discovered this map:

...which is dated to 1746, a little older than my b-i-l thought it was. He was delighted to hear that it was drawn over a quarter of a millennium ago.

But I was not completely satisfied with that date, and eventually tracked down the real original; the date was not 1746 but 1692.

I am kicking myself for making such a horrendous mistake; wrong by several decades.

Ack! I was mistaken, but in the wrong way - commented in a hurry because you had similar colours to puritybrown.

Um, yes. Describing Hungary as "the northern part of Turkey in Europe" should automatically date the map before 1699 - but you've probably spotted that by now, even if you did not at first.

Ehm, I'm not sure if I should bother you with this, so if i'm out of my way, just don't respond! it certainly isn't a rection on your actual blogs!

My name is Victor Engbers, and I'm embarking on a project to find out more on a forefather of mine, onf whom it is said he was born in Kyrgyzistan somewhere in the first half of the 1800's (and went by the name of Robert Alexander Cholhzmus, or Kolmus. The story goes that he left the country and went to France, where, after his wife and son died, he joined the foreign legion.

What i'am trying to find out is this: why would someone leave Kyrgyzistan in this period (something to do with the Khanat of Kokand maybe?). Economic reasons? But then: why go all the way to France?

I am going to France to try find out more on his past with the legion, but when i saw your site i thought: let's give it a try.

as i said, i'm just trying out some stuff. but if you would have a clue, it would be more then welcome!

(and sorry for my engrish!)
