OK, so first column of numbers is first round votes, second ros is how many gained after SF and SDLP were dropped off.

Which means that the DUP picked up 8 votes from people who put SF or SDLP as first choice? Does that make any kind of sense to anyone?

Still, good result for Alliance. Which is good.

Oh yeah, there are always a few voters like that - slightly under 2% in this case, which is more than usual, but not substantially more.

One should never underestimate the sophistication of the voter. While most of them will of course tend to vote "politically" there will always be some nationalist voters, to pick this example, who happen to like the UUP or DUP candidate personally, or perhaps who dislike the Alliance candidate, and choose to transfer their votes accordingly.

Fair enough. I've not really studied what happens with transfers too much, as we don't have a sane voting system I don't follow it. I've used it for college stuff and that's about it. Interesting to see though.

Those 18 votes, especially the 8 to the DUP, puzzled me too. Your explanation makes sense.
