Woot! Woot!

The Alliance Party has won a local council by-election, in the not obviously promising district of Skerries, in Coleraine. It's the first local by-election the party has won since I was its Director of Elections ten years ago. The figures on the first count were:

Alliance 694
DUP 678
UUP 625
SF 253
SDLP 219

I don't as yet have the later figures, but obviously Alliance picked up more transfers from the Nationalist parties than the DUP managed from the UUP (some of whose votes would also have leaked to Alliance anyway). So, more sober analysis to follow; but in the meantime, congratulations to Barney Fitzpatrick and his team.

I didn't realise until I looked at the map that the Skerries is the coastal strip from Portstewart to Portrush - which is my old stamping ground from when I was at University there. I always got the impression that it was a moderate district (Paisley was attacked far more by the Protestants I met there than by the Catholics). Good to see it going to the Alliance - and good to see the Alliance actually winning something.

It reminds me of the old call of the NI Politician.

Joking apart, it's great to see the first electoral test since the merry dancing in Stormont indicates a swing to the centre.

Of course, that part of the world has a broad representation of views and other constituencies are not likely to be as susceptible to moderate voting.

By the way, if Alliance has a landslide victory and invites you back to play a part, will you unambiguously accept a nomination for 1st or 2nd Minister?

Jim Hacker put it well:
Well, Ludo... all I've ever wanted to do is serve my country. I've never sought office. But I suppose that if my colleagues were to persuade me that the best place to serve it from was Ten Downing Street.then I might reluctantly have to accept the responsibility, whatever my own private wishes might be.

Here! Here!

Yes, First Minister, it was a brilliant episode, one of Hacker's best moments.

Some good news in local politics for a change! It's been quite a while, hasn't it! :)

tight, but a result. Congratulations to the electoral team. Has the Taleban DUP conceded defeat yet?
