December Books 1) The Reader

1) The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink

A fifteen-year-old German boy has a love affair with a woman twenty years older, in the early 1960s; years later, he finds himself observing her trial for war crimes - she had been a concentration camp guard, and is jailed. He knows she is innocent of some of the charges, but complicit none the less. I guess Hanna is a metaphor for Germany itself, with its difficulty in reading its own past. The end is not a happy one.

(PS: top UnSuggestion for this book is the Harry Potter boxed set, by J.K. Rowling. I can understand that.)

Every time I come across your journal when you have your Earthsea icon in use, I feel enchanted.

Re: Random
Thanks! I use it only for book reviews where I don't have another icon better suited to the subject matter - but that is a pretty high proportion of my posts!

Utterly off topic to this post I'm afraid, but thought I'd say hello and ask why it is that you must constantly beat me at Combat Cards. You always ruin my perfectly good runs. (Please read last bit with the humor intended.) Well done on my constant ass kicking.

Anyway, also please let me express my surprise and pleasure at finding possibly the only person I've ever come across who loves Dr Who more than my ex. Amazed and impressed there as well.

Anyway, letting you back to it.
Sorry for the interruption.

Hee hee. I admit I have not been playing this at all myself! But you are the second person to comment on my toughness!

I suppose I should take some solace in the fact that it's not just me, then, that you're trouncing.
