I didn't know the Germans knew how to make puns - How times are changing.

The Germans know how to make puns all right. Early in the days of the Nazi regime, IIRC, Göring's wife had a son, and there was at least one stand-up comic who made the joke that he would be called Hamlet, because: Sein oder nicht sein, das ist die Frage!

Which means both, To be or not to be, that is the question! and His or not his, that is the question!

I've been notionally learning German for five or six years now, and I don't get that joke. So I think maybe I should give up German.

It's almost more a cultural than a linguistic joke. The Bild is Germany's most notorious tabloid, the equivalent of the Sun; gebildet means educated, with undertones of being refined.
