Mastermind: I thought the HP Lovecraft questions were a little easier than the Agatha Christie ones - though surely it is a bit unsporting to restrict the Agatha Christie questions to the Poirot novels alone? My knowledge of Led Zeppelin and Gustav Landauer is less complete, but I thought the Landauer guy knew so much about him that he must have written the biography.

As for the general knowledge round, no doubt but that the Led Zeppelin guy got the hardest questions - and still won.

University Challenge: Er, yes. I just sent my future colleague who is a Wadham graduate a note of congratulation. I don't think I'm still in touch with anyone I knew at Robinson, which is probably just as well. I found the questions about flowers completely impenetrable, though artw had no difficulty in shouting the correct answer each time.

I remember reading an interview or article with somoen who was on MAstermind once, I think it was a "what it's like to be in the hot seat" style thing.

The person chose their specialist subject, and then contacted the researchers to find out if they could give some hints as to how they would select the questions. They came back and said along the lines of "we normally go through the most recent work of the acknowledged expert in the field, but that's you, so we're using X instead".

Person not impressed, as X is a) biggest rival and b) completely wrong, factually, on a few key points.

I can't, unfortunately, recall how well they did, but it was a good read. I'd hate to be the researcher for that , you need to find a different obsessive source for obscure topics all over the place, and just hope that you're more accurate than the obsessive being asked the Qs.

If that's not an argument for writing scholarly work under a pseudonym, I don't know what is. Although, I suppose it could be considered cheating if anybody found out.

I have met that Lovecraft lady, and we got on like a house on fire. She's on livejournal but she's only posted once this year.
