That's me told

Well, never again will I dare to express an opinion on other people's book reviews without first familiarising myself with professional standards of book reviewing. Just imagine! I thought that it was enough to be a simple reader, and make judgements as if they were a matter of taste! But nihilistic_kid has opened my eyes, with the force of reasoned argument, and I now realise that those of us without his extensive experience can say nothing worth listening to on the subject.

Yup. And in other news, I doubt you grant much serious attention to barstool blowhards when it comes to their theories of international relations and conflict resolution. "Nuke the bastards!" indeed.

I'm sure most of your readership will be able to read both sides of that exchange and take their own view.

Yeah. Reading his profile is enlightening.

Not wanting to be rude but the term wanker springs to mind. However if I am mis-interpreting the banter the term wanker still springs to mind.

Tread carefully! For if you are not deeply familiar with professional standards of wanking, nihilistic_kid will take you to task and shame you with the maturity and power of his arguments.

God, I long for the day I get offered a bribe for a review! I've done quite a bit of reviewing too, and for what I consider important magazines and sites. The fact that they were all non-paying doesn't diminish them in any way in my eyes, or in those of others, I imagine, and I doubt a single word would be different if I was getting paid for them.

Some people just have too much time on their hands. We all still love you, Nicholas!

You have to be...
... reviewing movies. There are a few cases relatively recently of movie studios paying people for positive reviews -- in some cases, inventing reviewers for that express purpose and writing the reviews themselves...

Books, no one cares. We don't matter, since we don't have hundred-million-dollar budgets. (Aside from J.K. Rowling, but SHE doesn't need to pay for reviews or anything else)

People tell me that when met in person, Nick is not a pompous ass but a rather nice person. I can't say that his online persona has me all eager to meet him, especially since he hinted that I was an easily-swayed befuddled idiot back in the summer of 2003. But, yes, people have reapeadetly told me that he's not like that in real life.

I guess he just doesn't have the balls to say in person what he says online.

Or he's afraid someone will slap his ass around. Which is true.

some years ago at a con, someone criticised Babylon 5 in its last series, and JMS (I was told) said that when the fan had an award winning show then he could pass comments, and not before. When I heard this, I told the person he should have answered "I've never flown a plane into a cliff face, but I still know its a bad idea".
To me if you have read a book, seen a movie, whatever then you can review it.

I have nothing to say that has not been said better before me.

So I shall add my own mature oar to the lot and say that the icon you used strikes me as being wonderfully appropriate.

(And that I quite liked the original post, though I lack even the 'simple reader' level of understanding on how reviews work.)

Such grave he evidences, such rhetorical skill he masters. Surely, I'm convinced of his case.

It appears from the postings related to this long running stream that the book reviewer is paralleled with theologians. My wife has a number of theological and pastoral qualifications. Her first essay for one course was to discuss the difference between the Roman Catholic and Lutheran definitions of a theologian.

It is the Roman Catholic Church's view that a theologian is a person who has studied theology and obtained qualifications to the effect that they are a theologian.

In the eyes of the Lutheran Church a theologian is anyone who thinks on God and his/her/its nature, or anything else.

I tend to side with the Lutherans on this one and carry that into the world of book reviews.

I think that supports NHW's position, but having read most of the linked postings and the sequence of comments from the original "offending" review I am a little bit dizzy and wondering how so few people have so much time on their hands to say so much, about so little.

Point of information: Do I need to show my NUJ membership card before I can post this?
