Haughey dead

The BBC is reporting that Charles Haughey has died.

Like him or loathe him (and I certainly loathed him), he was one of the most significant and symbolic figures of Irish politics from the 1960s to the 1990s.

More later, perhaps.

yup, Charles J has left us. Under the 'can't libel the dead' pinciple, I look forward to some cracking TV biographies --then again, knowing RTE's spinelessness...

And Roy Keane retires as well...

My boss was, unsurprisingly, drawing comparisons with Dev. Of course one of the major differences was that Dev actually went to prison for some of his crimes...

And Dev did handle some situations well, according to those who you would not have expected to be positive about him.

Now I want to play my Scrap Saturday tapes again.

I like Mary McAleese' line on the "reactions" page:
"Over the long years of his dynamic career, he weathered many storms and faced more than his share of drama and controversy."

One way of putting it.

I'm surprised at how... surprised I am. Somewhere deep down it felt like he was immortal.

Wow. He was one of the few politicians I could rely on to have my father incadescent with rage when he was saying nothing. He certainly wasn't popular in our house.
