Travel meme

Travel meme from kharin, sorry, qatsi here:

You'll need an atlas. This astrologer's atlas is at least accurate on longitude and latitude; even Wikipedia is pretty useful.

What are the furthest points North, South, East and West you have visited?

Farthest north for me: Åre, Sweden: 63.40 degrees north
Farthest south: Jerusalem, 31.76 degrees north
Farthest east: Baku, Azerbaijan: 49.88 degrees east
Farthest west: San Francisco, California: 122.44 degrees west

These four points can be used to define a rectangle (well, in more-or-less spherical geometry they do) whose borders lie along the lines of latitude and longitude you have identified. What's at the centre of this region? Have you been there? Where is the nearest place to the centre you have visited?

Centre of rectangle: 36.28 degrees west, 47.58 degrees north; it's the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the nearest land apparently being the island of Corvo in the Azores. I've never been there, nor have I been to Corvo island; my centre spot is about equidistant from the far west of Ireland and New Brunswick, both of which I have been to.

Actually I suspect this meme is best suited to those who have spent their lives exclusively on one continent. And anyone who's actually gone around the world, or been further west than they have east, can't do it at all.

Still, it gave me the excuse for a nice picture:

I've no idea how you've figured all that out, but I guess mine would be West: Chicago, North: Uppsala, East: Munich, South: Benidorm (I think, might be Zakinthos but I don't understand the longitude/latitude numbers). Chicago throws that square thing out completely! If I were to restrict it to Europe the West place would be Dingle.

Benidorm is 38°32' north, Zakynthos 37°47' north, so Zakynthos wins.

I think Zakynthos handily beats Munich as well on eastwardness - Munich is only 11°34' east, and Zakynthos 20°53' (even Uppsala is 17°38' east - Sweden is farther over than you might think!)

Haha, of course Zakynthos is more eastern, I told you I was no good at this!

When were you in Are? I don't remember that! What was it like?

Back in May, the week after William's wedding - see entries here, here, here, and here; and I took this picture of the lake.

Ah yes, I remember you were in Sweden but I hadn't taken in how far north you were. Looks like a great spot, even if the conference wasn't very satisfactory.

I had lunch with one of the NATO officials who had a hand in organising the conference on Tuesday; he referred to the whole experience as the "Rocky Åre Show".

Need a ruling
What's the ruling on farthest east vs. west?

I mean I've missed a vast swath of central Asia, but I can claim furthest east and west being fairly close to eachother on the international date line...

East: Auckland (or possibly Okinawa...I'll need to check on that)
West: Honolulu

South: Christchurch
North: Either Tofino, B.C.; Edinburgh/Leeth; or Moscow. I don't suppose flying the circumpolar route counts.

Re: Need a ruling
Auckland is way farther east than Okinawa!

Edinburgh just beats Moscow, but Tofino is not even as far north as Cornwall!

But if you've been through all 360 degrees of longitude, I think that may count as going round the world...

Taken to its logical extreme
It's rare (possibly unique) for me to be able to best you on a travel question, but although I haven't travelled anything like as much as you, what I have done seems to have been more extreme. (Your total distance would blow me out of the water, but much of it is puttering about in a small continent.)

Most North: Anchorage, AK. 61 degrees 13 minutes North
(Although Sandness, Shetland is a much closer second than I would have expected - 60 degrees 17 minutes North)
Most East: Paengaroa, New Zealand. 176 degrees 25 minutes East
Most South: Rotorua, New Zealand. 38 degrees 9 minutes South
Most West: Anchorage again. 149 degrees, 54 minutes West

However, if you really want to wreck this meme, a Swedish lady I know can probably out-do us all. I'm not sure what her Most North would be (presumably somewhere in Sweden), but her Most South would be the South Pole (90 degrees South). Which also, of course, counts as Most West (180 degrees West) and Most East (180 degrees East).
