The removal of Anna Maria Corazza Bildt from the ballot in the forthcoming election should probably not be interpreted as a change in the political direction of Moderaterna with regard to their EU policy. I think it's more likely to be because of personal tensions within the party and to consolidate the power of the current leadership. I think it's significant that all three of the current MEPs were removed from the candidate list at the same time, and all three of them are also veterans of the European parliament (having been members since 2004, 2004, and 2009), and all three are veterans of the Fredrik Reinfeldt era of leadership.

There might be a connection to the shift under the current leader Kristersson towards the far-right nationalist party of Sverigedemokraterna, something that Fredrik Reinfeldt was putting very sharp limits against during his tenure as party chairman, but it does not at first glance fit with the removal of Christofer Fjellner.

But this is just speculation from someone without any insider knowledge on the current inner workings within Moderaterna.

Thanks. She is the best known of the three, of course, which is why her removal caught the eye.
