the greatest Christmas song of all time??!!!!! !!!!!
I've heard of the Pogues but never listened to them, and I've certainly never heard of this song, let alone the video. SEE ICON. This is amazing and totally unexpectable. Many thanks for the link!

Hedgehogs
Oh, holy f*ck. I might have to concur with the Hon. Deputy Speaker, but I cannot help thinking of Nanny Ogg. And were it not for the absurd lateness of the hour (5:33 a.m.) I would look up and add here a link to my own instantiation of that great song.

I'm always bemused that the Pogues are best known for 'Fairytale' given that they have at least a dozen if not more songs that blow it away. I saw them a lot in the late 80's and my god they weren't just a band, more a force of nature. One of the most extraordinary things I've ever seen on a stage, a band who could and did reduce an audience of thousands to laughter then tears often in the same verse. Just the most anarchic, chaotic, gifted, brilliant and magnificent band of bastards you ever saw. The true and only heirs to The Clash, and that's before I talk about 'Thousands are Sailing' which has become what it describes, an old song that haunts and cheers me, and, jesus wept, it makes me cry.

Yeah, I'm not sure the article's writer knows much about music. Most particularly the Pogues music and Kirsty McColl at all at all.

Quite. Saying things like 'Sonically, it is very different from the usual Manchester-Irish, auto-crash sound of The Pogues' really doesn't help. FFS they were a London Irish band, a community that was very distinct from other Irish communities around the UK. I grew up just across the river from Dalling Road and the Irish Centre in Hammersmith. Not that I was ever allowed to go there, my mother wouldn't have been seen dead there. And not that I used to sneak in there from the age of about 15 and have my first pints. I was a good Catholic boy. Not me. Ahem.
Stop laughing at the back there.

PS @RedFiona I've just friended you. Anyone who quotes Rainy Night In Soho on their LJ must be worth talking to. :)

I try :)

There are a great many reasons why 'Manchester-Irish, auto-crash' is a terrible, terrible description of the Pogues.

Were your 5X great-grandparents related at the time, or did their descendants get together after the duel?

I wonder why they attacked the guards instead of just claiming they were making a TikTok video or something. Having weapons on their person just makes it obvious they were spying.
