Doctor Who and the Ghosts of N-Space

The first Who from 1996 that I encountered: The Scales of Injustice, shortly before I watched The Movie for the first time.

My favourite Who from 1996: We have to acknowledge the importance of The Movie for providing a glimmer of hope, as well as much distraction. But there are a number of good books in this range, and I will single out The Sands of Time as an excellent fifth Doctor story. Honorable mentions to The Man in the Velvet Mask, Who Killed Kennedy?, Decalog 3: Consequences, Downtime, Just War and The Eye of the Giant.

Moving swiftly on from: The Plotters. Meant to be funny but I couldn't get past the anachronisms.

So, what was your favourite of the above? What is the best bit? (And if you like, what is the worst bit?)

I remember how excited everyone was about the movie. I think I still have the free poster I won in the Radio Times competition.

Despite everything, I still like Eric Roberts's version of the Master.

Worst moment? I mean - worst moment EVER?

"I'm half human!"

You just don't do that. Wrong. Referee. You don't just dump that on the viewers and then bugger off (for a decade).

It's notable that although the Eighth Doctor is canonical this comment is not. Everyone's forgotten he said it. The Masters of the Whoniverse have disowned it. He was tired and emotional. It was the beer talking. it never happened.

I didn't rate Scales of Injustice. Some good things about it (the Liz/Doctor farewell you mention in your link above), but most of it felt like a rather tedious rehash of the Silurians & Sea-Devils, and the "which Sergeant shall I promote directly to Captain, completely ignoring the difference between commissioned officers and NCOs" subplot really annoyed me. It distorts Benton & Yates' relationship, and it isn't the way the Army works. I realise it's a bit odd complaining about this in the context of a fantasy show with much, much weirder things going on, but I think it reflects how little I was enjoying the book that I couldn't just set it aside as a false note in an otherwise OK work.

Who Killed Kennedy? I thought was terrific; myself I might even rank it above The Sands of Time.
