Government spends £37m fighting benefit cut appeals
Might it not be cheaper just to give people the money?

That was Sarah Palin's choice for same-sex spousal benefits in Alaska. She counted up the applications and how much it would cost, got estimates on the cost to fight it in court, and said it was cheaper just to pay the benefits. A neat way to silence the rightwingers.

The humour is excellent. The article on leaving academia is alarming.

As usual thanks for the links.

£37 million divided by 163,250 cases gives an average cost per case of £226.65. Even if you only count the cases they won, it's around £460 per case won. So if the claim is for more than £10 per week it's economical to fight the case. I'm surprised it only cost them £37M though. I suspect there's some costs being fudged there.
