Latest of the Vimes sub-series of Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett; once again, as in Thud, he takes Vimes out of Ankh-Morpork and the story is the better for it. I really enjoyed the combination of toilet humour (because poo is always funny) with cold clinical rage against racial injustice; I got a little lost with some of the topography of the river, but then there are not a lot of authors who would simultaneously try and satirise both Jane Austen and Mark Twain. Vimes is great, though I wish we could get rid of the other Guards.

What did you think of the developments in Willikins' character?

We'd surely seen his fighting abilities before? (In Jingo, a quick google reminds me.) We see more of him in Snuff than before, but I didn't feel it was a huge advance from what we already knew. Did you?

I'd forgotten about Jingo, I must read it again. I didn't find Willikins' behaviour untoward, myself, but I read comments from others who found the perceived changes in Willikins problematic.

At first I found I was a bit slow to get into it but am now happily ploughing through it - thumbs up and all of that!
