A couple of telling photographs from the current trip. First, me and my colleague T with the Minister and his Undersecretary, who are both just under 2 metres tall:

And then, me with (left) the head of their Addis Ababa office and (right) two colleagues from their Kampala office.

Ador Akok Athuai, on the far right above, is 7'2" (2.15m) tall, and I think is the tallest person I have ever met. He is related to the basketball player, Manute Bol, who died last month and was even taller.

I will never be able to pass myself off as a Southern Sudanese. At 5'10", 1.79 m, I am simply too short. (Quite apart from other problems with such a project.)

What striking photos! It's interesting what triggers the 'we're not in Kansas anymore...' feeling.

*laughs* I don't think of you as short either, but wow, dude, you're short! :)

Those are really great photos. I've had a guess at where my 5'2" would measure up to you all and I feel tiny now.

Crikey. 0_0 Ador Akok Athuai is taller than the tallest player in the Australian Football League (Aaron Sandilands, at 211cm)(the tallest person I've ever met).

Are Sudanese people on average taller than people in other countries? I thought I read somewhere that the Dutch were the (on average) tallest people in the world, but I can't imagine there are too many Dutch people capable of towering over these men!

Yes, this really scuppers your plan to adopt a South Sudanese secret identity. Shortie.

Blimey! I'm about the same height as you, and once in Oman I had the very odd experience of being the tallest person on the street! (There are plenty of Omanis taller than me, but I'm certainly well above the average height there.)

I've met a few Sudanese and noticed that they tended to be tall, but I hadn't really thought about it as an ethnic characteristic. I notice you specify "Southern Sudanese"; are they generally taller than Northerners?

Welcome to my world :D

Wow, most of those people would have *me* feeling small! And while I know 6ft2-and-a-bit isn't particularly tall, it's only on a rare occasion that I meet anyone taller than me.
