Belgium (and Netherlands)

Charlemagne on Belgium (translation into Dutch)

Election results from the Netherlands: Fistful of Euros. Hooray for D66! Boo for Wilders! Ha ha ha to Verdonk!

Although I'm voting in Sunday's election in Belgium rather yesterday's election up north, I have been following the Dutch campaign rather more closely on Twitter, I guess mainly because I actually know a couple of candidates there from long ago. (Was it the Dutch election, or Konnie Huq's engagement to Charlie Brooker, that caused Twitter to collapse yesterday?)

Fascinating reading; the BBC have majored strongly on the PVV's performance and said absolutely nothing about the encouraging showings of D'66 (much more my kind of liberalism than the VVD's, as you've probably gathered) or, indeed, GroenLinks.

Do the Dutch parties operate a cordon sanitaire against Wilders' party in a similar manner to the Belgians with Vlaams Belang, then?

It's a bit early to say with Wilders, but bear in mind that Balkenende's first coalition included the followers of Pim Fortuyn (who of course had been murdered just before the election).

The problem now is that, unlike what it looked like last night, there is now an option for the VVD and PVV to form a majority coalition with the CDA, which means a straightup rightwing government at a time when politicians are already inclined to cut budgets wildly.

If Wilders gets into government it will be interesting to see if the PVV does a LPF and disintegrate under the pressure
