Belgium as seen by Charlemagne

  • the Belgium I know is a laid-back, relaxed place with a well-developed sense of humour about itself. Unfortunately, it is hobbled by strangely irresponsible politicians, some of whom do not care if a quite different impression is sent to the outside world.

Obviously I could be impuning him terribly, but I find it makes me mildly cranky when someone who is English, and therefore someone whose language and culture is one of the few that reaches almost worldwide, seems to think the matter of language and culture is unimportant. I see some of his points, but I find the overall thing a little too eager to shove what is quite an important issue to people (I have a Walloon friend who gets very annoyed if I even mention Flemish) under a carpet.

In my opinion you're right, but so is he. For a Walloon to get very annoyed when a friend even mentions the existence of the six million Flemish people in the north of the country and the language they speak does not seem either constructive or proportionate. Some Flemish people are equally annoyed by the Walloons, and those are the people Charlemagne was trying to challenge, I think. Here we live very close to the border, and I am happy to say that I know lots of Belgians from both sides who, while being passionate about their own language and culture, also have a positive engagement with the language, culture and people on the other side. And who would largely agree with Charlemagne: they are frustrated that the politicians haven't found a better way through.
