IIRC it was written as a pastiche - I suspect it may be somewhat better than the books it was pastiching :-)

It is, massively. It's also hilarious - if you've read all the things being parodied.

That depends. I love the gothic novel, and I hate Jane Austen with a passion I can barely describe (I have less than zero interest in the domestic, yet the whole world seems to think that if you're a re a woman studying the romantics, you must want to write about Jane Austen), so I found Northanger Abbey particularly offensive.

It was Jane's first book and only published after her death. Personally, I'd have left it unpublished.
