Baffling question, reposted

Young F got this jewel in his cracker yesterday:
Q: What kind of relationship does coral have with algae?
A: A symbiotic relationship.
Now, this answer turns out to be perfectly sound biology (so I at least learned something) but doesn't seem to me paticularly funny. Am I missing some point about, perhaps, two popular celebrities or fictional characters called Coral and Algy? Or is it just meant to be funny because coral is generally hard and algae generally squishy?

Was it actually meant as a joke? Some crackers seem to be turning away from jokes and having a "fun, education fact" instead.

That's what I'd assume too. We had some really cracking crackers one year that had both.

Not all crackers have jokes in them. Some have general-knowlege-style questions (IIRC, you can buy special packs of 'Quiz Crackers', but I've encountered some sets that were mixed). Presumably, this was one of those.

I think they were looking for you to assume the relationship is social as in: They are brothers, or third cousins, or dating each other but not yet committed.

I reckon the person responsible for making the joke text was supposed to type Coral and Algie, but messed up the joke by typing the organism names instead.

Perhaps the joke is supposed to sound like:

"What kind of relationship does Coral have with Algie?",

and it's supposed to lead you to think of a couple who might be in a P G Wodehouse novel, not of the organisms. So it's a trick question type of joke.

However, it completely fails for me as I use the hard 'g' pronunciation (ˈælgiː) for algae, not the soft 'g' as is 'Algie'.

This reminds me of the NotNews article @davidgerard posted yesterday (see Twitter). Can't link as am on phone.
