Suddenly, Last Summer is one of my favourite films of all time.

And Some Like It Hot and Hiroshima Mon Amour are two of my all-time favourites. I didn't realize they came out in the same year.

Oh, and I believe I have seen Pickpocket - can polls be edited?

And "with a nod" not "which a nod"

Doh: 400 Blows is under Q.

Luckily I'd seen Ben Hur, otherwise I'd have been asking for a "none of the above" option...

I am surprised at people who have not seen Some Like It Hot!

Of course, then I remind myself that not everyone is a member of my family, all of whom can practically recite the dialogue off by heart.

I've seen a lot of that film at one stage or another, but I'm far from sure that I've seen all of it at one go.

So I didn't tick it.

I need a "none of the above" option.

I was close to needing that one. I think I got two or three.

Did you know that Tony O'Reilly auditioned for the lead in Ben Hur?

Ben Hur is so very very very dull. I marked it as 'seen' but truth is I've never got all the way through without falling asleep.

1959, I was 7 and just getting to the stage of enjoying film. I remember being taken to see Ben Hur, The Horse Soldiers, the two Disney films and, I think, The Mouse that Roared when they first came to our local cinema - though in the case of practically all these films that would more likely have been 1960 than 1959. I haven't watched Ben Hur since, and have no wish to do so, but I still retain very vivid memories of it.

But the very best films of 1959 - Some Like It Hot, North by Northwest - were films I only came to appreciate much later. And as aresult they are films I've seen many times.

I saw parts of Plan 9, but I figure that's the same as seeing all of it.

I saw more of those than I would have expected-- obviously a good year for film.

I've seen exactly three films from this list - Ben Hur, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Sleeping Beauty. The only one I didn't see in school as part of an assignment or part of class was Sleeping Beauty. I'm not sure what that says about the U.S. education system.

8 of them all the way through (or at least mostly in the case of Ben Hur). Rio Bravo is still probably my favourite Western.

Where does this list come from? If it's got Jerry Lewis on it, I guess it must be French in origin.

I pulled it together myself - essentially the aggregate answers I got from googling "top films of 1959" and similar permutations.

The Five Pennies is a biopic of the life of Re Nichols, starring Danny Kaye in the title role,, Barbara bel Geddes as his wife, and Tuesday Weld as their daughter. Louis Armstrong has a cameo in the film.

I only picked one "extra", and went for Carry on Teacher over Carry on Nurse. Although Nurse is better, I think Teacher is under-rated. And I don't like this version of 39 Steps.

I was born in a Very Good Year, really.

Some Like it Hot and North by Northwest are two of my favourite films.

Great Poll.
