One thing from last night's Torchwood...

Very much enjoyed last night's episode (apart from the peculiar slip of demoting Queen Victoria from HM to HRH - on a Home Office computer to boot). But we had a certain amount of background noise so I missed one important line about a character we didn't actually see:

What was said about Martha's wedding? And at what point in the episode?

I have social engagements in Brussels both tonight and tomorrow night, but will have to cut them short to get home in time...

I can't remember the exact dialogue, but after Jack phoned UNIT he complains about not being able to speak to Martha because she's on holiday, and then Gwen points out that she's actually on her honeymoon. I think that's all they say about it!

About... 15 minutes in, I think; Jack's trying to get in touch with Martha at UNIT, says "this is a fine time to go on holiday" and Gwen follows up with "You're not calling her, she's on her honeymoon." Or words to that effect, anyway.

They kept on referring to the Home Office whilst showing pictures of the Ministry of Defence Main Building. (Also, MoD MB was gutted and completely refurbished a few years ago, and is now mostly modern open-plan office space.)

However, they did show the correct location for Thames House, although I don't recall if they actually mentioned that it was the Security Service (aka MI5). As a bizarre little factoid, I have actually been in Thames House's underground car park!

It's Thames House, but I thought Mi5 moved across Vauxhall bridge to one of those green glass things about 10 years ago?

They did actually say "top of the Mi5 building", well, Lois did talking to someone.

You're thinking of MI6, who are in that bizarre architectural extravaganza at Vauxhall Cross. MI5 are at Thames House.

Oh. I thought, and had thought for many years, that 5 was in one building and 6 the other, didn't realise 6 was in both. Bussed past all of them every day I worked in Westminster as well.

Cool, in which case I stand corrected and, unsually, Rusty got something right about the way we're governed.

Now I'm confused.

MI5 (the Security Service) is based in Thames House, on one side of the river.

MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service) is based in Vauxhall Cross, on the other side of the river.

If looking at the Vauxhall building from the other end of the bridge, 6 is on the left side. On the right is a different building with a similar colour scheme--I always thought that was 5.

Appears with a bit of digging it's a block of flats...

Oh yes, St George Wharf. Very nice but rather pricey, to put it mildly.

I used to work with someone who was seconded to work in Vauxhall Cross, and he said that some people from 6 arranged to have a look soon after it opened for flat sales. Their view was that it was extremely nice but not affordable on their salaries...

I enjoyed the first episode last night. It was good to see this Sci-Fi series move from the obscure spot on BBC2 to prime time BBC1.
As this is a 5 episode series every night this week I'm reserving judgement until the end, but it is looking good.
What I like about the series is that they keep changing the format which keeps the audience guessing. Brilliant writing. Still a little bit too much of the Dr. Who spin-off about it, but good stuff.
Well worth watching !

And yet they're dressin up another feisty black female as a Torchwood candidate. TWO black women on one show?! I guess it could happen!
