I think this will depend on the origin of the reader - nipple covers are a US thing, food is a UK thing.

But, um... why do nipple covers exist in the first place? I've never heard of them, under any name.

I had to tick "both" since I'm an American living in the UK. :)

Me too (well, in Ireland) but my brain still goes to nipples first. :)

Yep, Cornish pasties may have been ruined for me now. And here I was planning to gorge on them before my departure from the UK in a month's time.

It very much depends on context - I would be more likely to think food if the context involved cornwall but as I'm faffing about on the edges of the retro/burlesque culture, I'm equally likely to think 'nipples' in that context.

Are the words pronounced differently?

I think so: the food with a short a and the erotic clothing item with a long a.

Nipples for my American upbringing, food for my UK-based reading, the two go great together. Mmmmm.

I can't help giggling madly at everyone so surprised by the nipple thing, I hadn't realized the term hadn't left the States much at all, I guess. I can link to knitting and crochet patterns to make your own, if it would help. . .

Knit your own pasties, eh? British Rail used to sell pasties like that.

I've never heard of the nipple cover things before. I mean, I was aware such things existed, but had no idea what they were called...

There's actually two different types of food called "pasties": Cornish pasties (singular pasty) and Northern Irish pasties (singular pastie).

According to the first of those articles, Cornish pasties are known in the US (specifically in parts of Michigan and Pennsylvania), and are the origin of Mexican "pastes"!

Nipples...? o_0 Nope, ain't never heard that one before.

Pasties usually makes me think of food, though sometimes it makes me think of really bad Klingon prosthetics...

As I lived in both the UK and US, it's unsurprising I think of both. Food pasties are very popular here in South Australia, owing to Cornish migration.

On the nipple side, that is, and courtesy of a British company. (In case anyone's interested.)
