The President's livejournal

I was fascinated to learn, via me good friend Fraser Cameron's op-ed in today's NYT/IHT, that Livejournal's popularity in Russia goes right the way to the top: blog_medvedev is President Medvedev's account. Comments are moderated, and must be in Russian. Even so, his 22 April speech about the development of the internet in Russia, delivered straight to camera in jeans and casual jacket, has over 4000 comments. Even if you don't have a word of Russian, take a few seconds to watch the way he does it - it's an impressive performance.

That was quite interesting, actually - I shoved the text of his speech through Google Translate, since I only know a few words of Russian and can just about slowly figure out a rough pronunciation when I'm reading, and I was quite impressed with the intelligibility of the translation. The biggest glitch was "старт-апы" coming out as "start-apy" - going by the context and from hearing him say it, I presume it's supposed to be "start-ups". Though I'm very impressed with "электронного правительства" being translated as "e-government".
