Another first for Iceland

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is apparently about to become Prime Minister of Iceland.

I hope that the various commentators on this do at least make an effort to spell her name correctly.

I think that as long as your not expecting the accents and the whatever you call the thing with the d, there's half a chance they might. But the accents etc, not a chance.

People rarely bother even spelling 'é' properly.

Thorn, I believe. But what would they replace it with? A d because it looks like it, or some approximation of the sound along the lines of Mueller for German Müller?

I assume a d. What is it actually supposed to be sounded out as?

It's a voiced dental fricative. The way the English pronounce 'th' at the start of the word 'this', as opposed to the voiceless 'th' at the beginning of the word 'thatch'. (Not quite the way Irish people pronounce it, which is a stop rather than a fricative, but similar.)

I'm sternly resisting the "Althingi to all people" joke.

Oh dear, failed.

I hope people don't refer to her as Sigurðardóttir, but I've seen it already.

Is the only acceptable variant her full name: Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir ?

(I personally don't like the familiarity of using only the given personal name for public figures.)

But what about Fred?
The Independent had a big story about her being the first gay head of state ever, which I thought was a bit presentist - I thought Frederick the Great had covered that 250 years ago - And I was surprised that the Independent made any comment on it.

Re: But what about Fred?
I think Edward II might disagree ;)

(Possibly they mean openly gay)

Re: But what about Fred?
Prime minister, not head of state - plenty of gay monarchs down the ages (and let's not forget President Buchanan).
