Oliver Postgate, 1925-2008

Like many on my f-list, I am very sorry to hear of the death of Oliver Postgate, creator of the Clangers, Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine and Bagpuss. He was also the grandson of George Lansbury, the pacifist leader of the Labour Party, and managed to grasp the Web as a platform for his own personal political views.

For those who want to indulge in nostalgia, the BBC's Clangers website has much of interest, including the moment when they appeared on Doctor Who (also on Youtube here). Also, rather movingly, brisingamen tells of an encounter with him a few years ago.

'"to go to war" is still being regarded as a viable ultimate option, even though it has long been clear that apart from certain very exceptional circumstances, war has become not only unwinnable but is also so universally damaging as to be disastrous for both winner and loser, leaving in its wake provocations to revenge and terrorism that may continue indefinitely.'

That's the truth.

When I get my Christmas tree up, my usual tree-top angel (Tiny Clanger in a tutu with a tinsel halo) will sport a black armband for this year. Magnificent stuff, all of it.
