So, did anyone else see it?

We're on the road today, but the traffic on the motorway was pretty awful, so we pulled off at a village between Ghent and Bruges. I hadn't told F what was happening in the sky, but projected an image of the truncated sun onto the skin of my hand using Anne's binoculars. At first he thought my finger must be blocking part of the solar disc, but then he looked more closely and realised what was going on - and was thrilled.

He came with us to see the total eclipse in August 1999, but since he was less than three weeks old at the time doesn't really remember it!

We only had a partial one, so there wasn't too much to see (although we did look into the sky, we have some special glasses just for watching eclipses) but we watched the total one online from China, which was broadcast by NASA...beautiful...I have yet to see a total solar eclipse, I've only seen a few partial ones so far, I have had the chance to observe a total lunar one though...

Yup - got some photos of it via the Heath Robinson-esque method of resting a pair of binoculars on my head and using that to project an image onto white card, then snapping that with my mobile phone.

Not exactly a recipe for brilliant pics, but they show the partial eclipse quite clearly!

With the monsoon-like downpours here on Thurs I don't think we could tell if there was an eclipse or not. Dark is dark.

why was i not told?
It really does befall you, sir whyte, as a duty to humanity to keep us informed of eclipses, partial/total/lunar/solar, preferably BEFORE they happen.

I used to keep an eye on upcoming eclipses when younger but have rather taken my eye off the ball. Shame I missed it.

Cool. Well done for giving F cause for enthusiasm about science. I missed it, as was working all day. And I slept throught the one in '99. But never mind, one of these days I'll travel somewhere to see one.
