May Books 18) Jhereg

18) Jhereg, by Steven Brust

Another of my sf reading resolutions for this year. This is the first in a long series of novels featuring assassin Vlad Taltos, in a well-imagined high fantasy setting. The style owes a great deal to Roger Zelazny, but I felt was not quite as even. Complex plot which more or less made sense; I quite enjoyed it, but not really enough to seek out more in this series.

I was surprised at how good the first couple of that series were, but they bogged down in their own mythos later.

What made it one of your resolutions? Sorry if you've already explained and I just forgot.

You might well enjoy The Phoenix Guards which is loosely based on the plot The Three Musketeers and less loosely modeled on the style of Dumas set in the same world but before the mess of the Interregnum. I loved it - although the sequels markedly less so (rather like the Dumas actually) but then I like the Vlad books too - with a couple of exceptions.

Trust me, they get better, crossing over from succesful light entertainment into serious (but still fun) fantasy by the third or fourth book.

Hello. Our mutual friend pgmcc suggested I check out your lj, and quite interesting it turned out to be! I hope you don't mind that I've added you as a friend.

"The style owes a great deal to Roger Zelazny, but I felt was not quite as even."

This captures my feelings about Brust in a nutshell.
