Thank for this. The worrying thing is, he seems petty enough to go nuclear on the slightest excuse.

Yes but
Yes but....not unexpected from traditional Republican writing. Trump is not ideologically right wing or left wing. He is a populist who rose to power on the rallying cry of "Drain the Swamp" because traditional power blocs (both Blue and Red) were perceived to have failed the common American people. This is perhaps not an unreasonable view. The Single European Act contained social cohesion and community protection funds designed to limit the damaging effect of the opening up of huge trade borders. America forgot this in their trade treaties and paid the price of voter disenfranchisement and hostility. "What did NAFTA do for me? It gave my job to a Mexican"! The traditional power blocs ignored this and it cost them. Had it not been Trump, it would have been another populist that would have tapped into this error. There was the same issue in Britain's BREXIT vote. For decades since the abandoning of consensus politics, there was a growing bow wave of discontent waiting for the right leader to cause it to break. Instead of tackling the underlying issues of confirming a Western form of social contract, there was an assumption that inertia would prevent the rise of resistance and that a few witty put downs at elite parties would be enough to deter populists from garnering support. If we really wish to change the political landscape then "fighting Trump" is arrogant tomfoolery. The customer went into the store and actively rejected the Red and Blue brands as Not What They Want. He bought Trump's vision as being better for him, his family and his country. What needs to happen now is for all parties to look and see what they got wrong and why the voters rejected them and CHANGE. Until that happens, Trump and those like him will continue to gain ground. "The fault dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves".
