The State Department’s entire senior management team just resigned

*gulp*

This appears to be just a slightly more belated acceptance by Trump of their pre-inauguration resignations. Of course, they don't have replacements ready to announce, but the acceptance of their resignations came immediately after Tillerson was confirmed by the Senate.

What is striking me as I listen to the naivety of the British government's approach to post Brexit trade and Trump's even more preposterous posturing on tariffs at the Mexican border is how little they seem to understand about modern industrial supply chains. Whole industrial sectors are locked into arrangements where components and assemblies cross borders. It's not just about the finished product. And tariffs are only one small part of the problem from that perspective. Reliable, timely supply is the essence of the game and if my assembly plant can't get it's seats from Portugal in a predictable and reliable way I'm screwed. I have to maintain buffer inventory which is hugely expensive. In North America it's worse. Virtually every vehicle has components from somewhere else (and those components use materials from somewhere else and so on) and that can't be changed in a hurry.
