Of course, not only Britain uses GMT. There are other countries with better weather on the same meridian: Portugal, for instance. Seems like a plan, to me!

I got the impression from the minutes of the 1884 meridian conference that they imagined universal time might replace local time for all purposes. Instead we got daylight saving time...

Japan doesn't use daylight savings time/summer time. Just like the US/European difference in date when the clocks change, this causes problems - I missed a call with someone in the UK on the Sunday because we'd forgotten about the relative difference changing from eight hours to nine.
