Those 1001 books

books
I see that the Guardian has launched a new 1000 great novels series. Irritatingly, the full list isn't yet on-line, but I take this opportunity to go through the list of 1001 books you must read before you die, at least according to Peter Boxall. As usual, bold means I've read it (with link to review if there is on), italic means started but didn't finish, struck through means I hated it. The canonical version of this list does the books in chronological order of publication, but I have listed them here alphabetically by author. (As far as I can; got a bit confused with some of the compound surnames.)

Such lists are odd. Why "A Town Like Alice" but not "On the Beach" or "Nausea" but not "The Roads to Freedom"?

I've read around 165 too though the overlap with your list is not great.

Why those? Possibly because those are the ones the original list maker has read?

hmm, 170/1001, I think. (Have I really read Hemingway's novels, or do I just think I have?) I quibble with the list, of course -- Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian? WTF? ... and too many Big Names with multiple works -- but there are novels there I've never heard of that sound intriguing. Good to see some genre fiction there too.

>>Good to see some genre fiction there too.<< That's what I noticed too, normally these lists are stuffed to the gills with "mainstream" novels, this has ones that I'll actually read too. It has murder mysteries too, which they normally never have.

Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian? WTF?

Indeed. Followed closely by The Swarm, by Frank Schatzing.

I managed 103 which I was pleased with (although a lot of this was the Big Name with multiple works effect.)

Yeah, I found the Ukrainian thing an eyebrow-raiser also.

Of the ones you haven't read I recommend Diary of a Nobody and Under the Skin (Michael Faber) and the Golden Notebook if you feel like a longer read

Personally, I think people who write books entitled:

"(Large Number) of (Something) you must (Verb) before you die."

Should die, for the crime of excessive unoriginality...

Wow, that's a lot of books. I admire your dedication in getting through the list, never mind the individual books in question!

I think I am purposely not going to study that list, because I reckon anything that says "**** (things to do) before you die" that I have done less than 10% of is quite, quite depressing. Though a quick glance through does at least show that I have read some of them.

Come on Nicholas, with your reading speed you should get through the remainder of this list in roughly five, six years, so get cracking!

Not that it would be worth the effort. This is an undigested lump of mainly middlebrow books, with no sense to it, a lot of tediously safe choices with no real pattern to them. If you want to use a reading list to guide you, it at least has to have some underlying rationale as to why you need to read these novels by those authors and not any others. This just seems to be a grabbag.

a lot of tediously safe choices

Maybe so, but there are lots of experimental novels too.

ETA: mainly middlebrow books

What would you expect to see on a highbrow list?

I'm afraid your link under Ivanhoe goes to the review of The Catcher in the Rye,

382. I will probably never re-read 180 of those, mind you. (And at least four novels on there were so godawful I'm sure I'd never have finished them if it weren't for having to write essays.)

To no one's great surprise I'm terribly under-read with 26 finished and 16 in various stages of incomplete.

142. Interesting list; Peter Boxall is clearly a fan of the experimental novel. There are several on the list that I found almost unreadable. Auster's The Music of Chance (meaninglessness and absurdity of life); Calvino's The Castle of Crossed Destinies (stories built out of fragments based on tarot cards), Perec's A Void (novel-length lipogram), and Robbe-Grillet's Jealousy (repetitious description of surface details replaces characterization). And I see other examples of the same tendency on the list that I haven't read—Henry Green, Michel Houellebecq, Raymond Queneau. I say almost unreadable advisedly—certainly these were all memorable experiences, but I wouldn't like to read any of them again.

On re-reading that comment, I seem to be criticizing these novels. But that wouldn't be right. There are novels that you can read again and again (like Persuasion, or Moby-Dick) getting something new out of it each time, and there are novels that make such a strong impact the first time that you don't need to read them again, or such a disturbing effect that you don't want to read them again. I don't think it's fair to say that the first category are better than the second, it's nice to have both. (Of course you should buy the first kind and borrow the second kind.)
