Really, there are about five Ten stories that I think are equally best, but I couldn't choose five, so I was forced to go with the one that gave me my twisted happy ending. :)

Part of my problem is that although I saw all of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Doctor stories when they were first broadcast, I haven't seen them since, and I'm afraid my memory isn't that good :-) I saw a fair chunk of the 4th and 5th Doctors but can't remember any of the titles and I've tried to expunge all memories of the 6th and 7th Doctors from my mind.

There were some hard calls on this.

3: All of Season 7 was superb, but Inferno edges the others - if Ambassadors lost that bloody episode with Reegan running around trying to banjo the rocket it would've won.

4: Oh dear... it could easily have been City of Death, The Deadly Assassin, Genesis of the Daleks... but in the end the sublime Robots of Death takes it.

5: Caves of Adrozani came close, but I love the intricacy of Castrovalva.

6: Pin the tail on the donkey... not much between any of them.

7: The Greatest SHow In The Galaxy came close, but Curse of Fenric stole it. Probably the most nuWho-like oldWho story?

9: I suppose Eccleston-topless-fanciers might vote for Dalek, but there really is no sensible choice other than TEC/TDD.

10: Blink ONLY JUST pipped The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead and The Girl In The Fireplace

Definitely the most nuWho-like oldWho story -- and better in some ways, because it has the oldWho virtues of caring about the story as well as the emotions.

That last season was very nuWho in a lot of respects - it was Ace's Story in the same way that nuWho seasons 1,2 and the last third of 4 were Rose's Story and 4 was Donna's Story. (In retrospect, maybe that's why Freema Agyeman ended up being so disappointing - season 3 very much wasn't Martha's Story, and only in 3x12/3x13 did she really get much to do!)

CoF wasn't so much about Ace being a Wolf of Fenric, and causing herself to come into being, but much more about Ace coming to terms with her destructive, negative side, and maturing from a girl into a woman. All very nuWho ;)

I'm rating the Hartnell years based on the few I've seen rather than read - I haven't seen The Aztecs but I think it'd pip Dalek Invasion of Earth had I been able to see it.

Similarly I suspect that if I'd seen The Enemy of the World properly rather than the patchy reconstruction-with-stills it might have beaten Tomb of the Cybermen

*tries to remember what she voted for*

The Aztecs [I loved the Doctor & companion banter];
The Tomb of the Cybermen [first ever Old School arc, and I adored Two & Jamie];
The Three Doctors [only one I've seen >.>];
City of Death [Douglas Adams ftw];
Kinda [it's the crackiest episode of the Old School arcs, I swear];
Timelash [C'mon! HG Wells! :D];
The Happiness Patrol [♥ ♥ ♥]
I love Eight dearly, but I couldn't bring myself to vote for the movie. Ew.

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances [just...amazing]
Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey's End [fantastic companion wrap-up to Rusty's era, and, personally, I liked how Rose's arc ended. I think I'm the only one. >.>]

Donna was awesome in everything other than The Runaway Bride. But she's got a sparkly ring. That sparkled. A bit like the one the female hand took from the Master. Or even a bit like fob watches ;P

I have a gut feeling that we have not seen the last of DoctorDonna. She is officially Made of Brilliant and although I don't think Catherine Tate will be in S5 or the specials, I think there'll be a one-off that sees DoctorDonna 'reborn' and battling whatever was trapped in the Master's ring. (Stop sniggering at the back).

Donna officially outranks Liz Shaw as my favourite companion now. Which is saying something.

Dalek Master Plan / War Games / Planet of the Spiders / Deadly Assassin / Caves of Androzani / Revelation of the Daleks / Curse of Fenric / Oh FFS / Father's Day / Army of Ghosts - Doomsday.

Tick boxes, not radio buttons!

I just rewatched Planet of the Spiders recently and was greatly struck by its sincerity of purpose. You can critize it, but it does so many Pertwee-era things right (as opposed to comfortably, Daemons stylee) that I think there's a good argument for it as best Pertwee story. Even over Inferno, which is just that bit too long. I have to say this vote surprised me. Interesting to see my Worst Pertwee, The Mind of Evil, get two Best Pertwee votes. For me, the the clincher in my worst of vote was the enormously unlovable way he delivers the line "Brigadier, do you think for once you could manage to arrive before the nick of time?", which is only cemented by the loveble way Nick Courtney delivers the follow-up. I can see it has merits but the whole story is so bad-Pertwee.

Respect to whoever voted Warriors' Gate as best Tom Baker story -- I can see it but I still have to go Deadly Assassin.

Two Doctors leading Colin Baker = your flist needs its head examined.

I'm struck by how many of the stories I voted for are regenerations / season finales -- only Dalek Master Plan, Deadly Assassin, Father's Day aren't.

Warriors' Gate was something that would've worked beautifully in the McCoy era, I think they could've played up the symbolism and slightly surreal nature of it - but it viewed like clear air turbulence in Tom's tenure! It was a seriously ambitious attempt to do something different, but the time wasn't right...

The Daemons, Genesis, Caves of the Androzani, Revelation, Fenric (from the book only), not a fair question, The Empty Child (hopefully will not have nightmares tonight) and Love and Monsters. In regards to that last one, I know I'll probably be the only one voting for it.

1. The Dalek Invasion of Earth, mainly for bleak, 1940s Resistance mood of it, and probably because I watched the Stolen Earth/Journey's End double bill today.
2. Tomb, because archaeologists in the future + returning monster is such a high concept.
3. Inferno, because everybody dies. Ish.
4. Fendahl, because palaentologists in the present + Cthulhu-esque horror which even the Time Lords couldn't beat is hard to beat.
5. Androzani.
6. Mindwarp, mainly for the bit in episode 4/8 when the Doctor is taken out of the story and then has to watch a tragedy unfold.
7. Greatest Show, because of the terrific supporting performances all down the line.
8. Silly question.
9. Empty Child/Doctor Dances
10. Fires of Pompeii - witty, gorgeous to look at, could have done with another ten minutes of it at least.

Hello fellow "Fires of Pompeii" voter; I also thought it was the most old schoolish Tennent ep because Donna's arguement with the Doctor in this story reminded me a little of Barbara's arguement with the Doctor in "The Aztecs". Maybe Donna didn't put it as eloquently, but her heart was in it... all those lives lost... and then the irony at the end. I wish SciFi would have shown the last scene because it was just too cool.

1. The Aztecs, mainly for Barbara butting heads with the Doctor and the Doctor's romance with Cameca.
2. Invasion, because it was the first real UNIT story.
3. Silurians, because of the conflict between science (the Doctor) and the military (the Brig). Also because it was a bit like Quartermane (sp?).
4. Masque of Mandragora, because aliens in the Italian Renesaunse was an inspired idea, the costumes were gorgeous, and they filmed in "The Village".
5. Kinda.
6. Vengence on Varos, mostly because of the part where the Doctor was seeing through the illusions; shirtless Jason Connery didn't hurt, though.
7. Rememberance of the Daleks, because it was almost like a UNIT story that predates UNIT (almost chose Silver Nemesis, but I never saw the whole thing).
8. Silly question.
9. Father's Day.
10. Fires of Pompeii.

Oh yes, Fires of Pompeii (and Planet of the Ood) are old-school; it's quite easy to imagine the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth or Seventh Doctors having the same moral dilemma, and being taken to task on their decision by Sarah/Tegan/Peri/Ace.

> Donna's arguement with the Doctor in this story reminded me a little of Barbara's

YES! Donna is really the first companion since Barbara who had the strength of moral certainty to ask the Doctor why he was doing things, not what he was doing. An astonishing straight performance, the first time we'd really seen Catherine Tate playing Donna in deadly earnest.

I am with you on Mindwarp, for much the same reasons, though our opinion does seem to be a minority one!

I can remember watching it the first time round and thinking "That was brilliant!". And then six weeks later we had a freeze-frame still with a pink halo and that was that.

Do the non-Doctor episodes even count?

In any case, for Doctors 1-7 I voted for the fave of the ones I've seen, Nine I had a... well not a clear fave but a fave. Ten's? There's so many of them, and sure some of them aren't up to par but most are great and there are several that are fantastic so I've no choice but to vote for They've all been great!

Actual best Eighth Doctor story is very hard to choose. I think I'm gonna have to go with Neverland due to my insane love of Charley.

For Nine and Ten my vote is skewed: favourite Nine episode is The Doctor Dances, but The Empty Child still grates like whoa in a lot of ways. So couldn't vote for that. Same for Ten: vote would have been given to Turn Left with heavy leanings towards Utopia, but as a whole the three-part arcs don't work for me as well as other episodes. Ended up picking based on fun for Ten.

I still have only seen two Six episodes, but I stand by my choice there. God, the most dire era ever. (This from someone who picked Battlefield as their favourite Seven - I truly love that daft thing. And The Daemons for Three!)
